Stephen H. Williams
A member of the Navy Band Commodores since 1994, Steve has been the unit’s lead saxophonist since 1997 and music director since 2003. Chief Williams has composed and/or arranged over 40 compositions for the group and was the producer for its recently released CD Directions.
In his civilian life Steve has appeared on several albums including the Grammy nominated Caribbean Jazz Project/Afro-Bop Alliance Big Band featuring Dave Samuels. He has played lead alto sax with The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and toured with The Glenn Miller Orchestra. He was a semi-finalist in the 1988 Hennessey Cognac Jazz Search. His freelance work in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area included performances with Joe Williams, The Temptations, Rita Moreno, Jim Neighbors, Linda Lavin, Hal Linden, Eddie Fisher, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, The Ice Capades, The Mills Brothers, Floyd Cramer, Al Hirt, Boots Randolph, Wayne Newton, Maureen McGovern and many others. He was also a bandmaster and sideman with Crystal, Princess, Norwegian Caribbean, Premier, and American Hawaii Cruise Lines before joining the Navy.
Steve attended North Texas State University where he played lead alto saxophone in the famed One O’ Clock Lab Band. A group he formed and led also won the 1988 National Collegiate Jazz Competition. |
