Meet the Musician

Musician 1st Class Christopher G. Buchanan,

Musician 1st Class Christopher Buchanan, from Fairfax, Virginia, joined the Navy Band as trumpet instrumentalist in 2014 after serving nearly seven years with the United States Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, Maryland. He holds Bachelors of Music in composition and performance and a Master of Music from the University of Illinois. He is currently completing final documents towards a Master of Music in musicology and a Doctor of Musical Arts in trumpet from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Buchanan has studied trumpet with Ronald Romm, Michael Ewald, Joe Burgstaller and Ed Hoffman, and composition with Joel Puckett, Stephen Taylor and Zack Browning.

Prior to joining the Navy, Buchanan performed with Sinfonia da Camera and the Champaign-Urbana Symphony. He has also appeared regularly with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra and has served on the performance faculty of the University of Virginia. As a composer and arranger, he has written music for the U.S. Marine Band, U.S. Naval Academy Band, Charlottesville Symphony and members of the Baltimore Symphony, and his arrangements are frequently performed by the U.S. Navy Band.

In his spare time, Buchanan enjoys running marathons and ultramarathons as well as spending time with his family.
