Chief Musician Justin J.Cody,
Assistant Musical Director, Keyboards
Chief Musician Justin Cody, a native of Sauk City, Wis., joined the Navy Band in 2008. He began his musical studies on piano at age seven, and by age 12, he was composing and performing solo concerts. At age 15 he was commissioned to compose a piece for the vocal jazz group Five by Design and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, and at age 16, he studied composition and piano at the Interlochen Arts Camp. Cody later earned a Bachelor of Music in composition and piano performance with a jazz emphasis from West Virginia University in 2003 where he also won the Young Artists Concerto Competition on piano. He studied composition with John Beall and piano with James Miltenberger.
Cody enlisted in the Navy in 2003 and served in the Fleet Forces Band in Norfolk, Va., for four years. He had the pleasure of deploying with the U. S. Navy Showband onboard USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) for a six month humanitarian mission in the Philippines and Indonesia. During this deployment, he qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS), completing training and qualifications to perform duties aboard United States surface warships.
Cody’s awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
