Meet the Musician
Musician 1st Class Athus F. Delima,
A native of Brazil, Musician 1st Class Athus Delima and his family came to the United States when he was eight years old and settled in Dallas, Texas. His musical training began when he was nine. His mother, a choir director and vocal coach, ensured young Delima always had a gig and also gained valuable musical experience at a young age playing with the choir.
Delima graduated high school from the Jack E. Singley Academy (Irving, Texas) in 2007 but studied classical string bass at Irving High School (Irving, Texas) where he made the Texas All-State Band in 2005. Delima has studied with Chris Severin and fellow Brazilian Renaldo Lobo.
After high school, with the promise of college benefits and a chance to be a professional musician, Delima entered the Navy as a musician, and after completing training at the Navy School of Music in Little Creek, Va., was assigned to Navy Band New Orleans. Delima served there with Crescent City Krewe and the Ceremonial Band. In 2010 he auditioned and was accepted into the U.S. Navy Band.
