Musician 1st Class Benjamin E. Ford,

Musician 1st Class Benjamin Ford, a native of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, joined the Navy Band Commodores jazz ensemble in 2014 as a trombonist. He earned a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance with a music history minor from West Chester University and a Master of Music in jazz performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2011, while studying at the University of Illinois, he was selected from a nationwide audition search to perform as lead trombonist with the Disneyland Resort All-American College Band. Performing as lead trombonist with the University of Illinois Jazz Trombone Ensemble, the group won the Eastern Trombone Workshop National Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition in 2012 and 2014. In 2012 they also won the International Trombone Association Kai Winding Trombone Ensemble Competition, becoming the first ensemble to win both in the same year.

Ford’s teachers have included Matthew Niess, lead trombonist for the Army Blues jazz ensemble, jazz trumpeter John Swana and legendary trombonist Jim Pugh.
