Meet the Musician
Senior Chief Musician Ruth J.Keehner,
Senior Chief Musician Ruth Keehner, a native of Gardner, Kan., began studying the oboe when she was nine years old. While completing a Bachelor of Music from Wichita State University, she played second oboe with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Palmer. In 1992, she earned a Master of Music from The Juilliard School and performed a recital with the Amphion Woodwind Quintet at Carnegie Hall. Her teachers include Paige Morgan, Linda Strommen, and Elaine Douvas. Before joining the Navy Band in 1997, she was an active freelance musician in the National Capital Region and performed with the Alexandria, Annapolis, Harrisburg, Fairfax, and Maryland symphonies as well as the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. She attended the Bay View and Chautauqua Music Festivals, and the LA Phil Institute. Keehner was a member of the American Sinfonietta for three years and performed for three summer festivals and two European tours.
Currently, Keehner is the principal oboe and Unit Leader of the Concert Band. Previously, she served as the concert series manager, scheduling and organizing Concert Band performances for ten seasons. Outside the band, Keehner enjoys spending time with family, gardening, reading, and working on a never-ending list of home improvement projects.
