Meet the Musician
Musician 1st Class Ashleigh Leas,
Musician 1st Class Ashleigh Leas, from San Antonio, Texas, joined the Navy Band in March 2016 and serves as flutist in the Concert and Ceremonial Band. Prior to joining the Navy Band, she held the position of principal flute with the Midland-Odessa Symphony and Missouri Symphony, flute/piccolo with the West Texas Winds professional woodwind quintet and piccolo/third flute with the Amarillo Symphony. In addition, Leas also appeared regularly as a substitute flute/piccolo with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Orlando Opera and the San Antonio Symphony. An avid teacher, she has served as adjunct professor of flute at Trinity University and Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas, and has maintained a private studio and appeared as a clinician at local schools. Leas has also attended numerous summer festivals, including the International Festival Institute at Round Top and Aria International Summer Music Academy. She was a selected performer for the Texas Flute Society’s James Galway International Masterclass, the Jeanne Baxtresser International Masterclass at Carnegie Mellon University and the Ransom Wilson International Masterclass in Monterchi, Italy.
Leas earned a Bachelor of Music in performance from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a Master of Music in performance from Rice University. Her teachers include Tal Perkes, Damian Bursill-Hall and Leone Buyse.
In her spare time, she enjoys volunteer work, reading, painting and exploring Washington, D.C.
