Master Chief Musician Randy Mattson, a native of Marshall, Minn., joined the Navy Band in 1991 after seven years as a bassist with Las Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton.  A graduate of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he studied double bass with Richard Straub and performed in the award winning UNLV Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Frank Gagliardi. Mattson has appeared on several television programs including Late Night With David Letterman, Donahue and The Arsenio Hall Show. He has also performed with the Walfredo de los Reyes Afro-Cuban Ensemble, Diane Schuur, Teddy Edwards, Jack Sheldon, Ray Charles and Bryan Duncan.

 

Mattson currently serves as the specialty groups department chief-in-charge and bassist with the Sea Chanters chorus after spending 15 years with the Commodores jazz ensemble.
