Meet the Musician
Musician 1st Class Kevin C. McDonald,
Musician 1st Class Kevin McDonald joined the Navy Band in 2014. He has shared the international concert stage with Dave Liebman, Paquito D’Rivera and Lee Konitz in venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge and Bimhuis. McDonald has collaborated with groups ranging from the Limon Dance Company to the Amherst Symphony Orchestra, served as percussion principal for the 2012 Disneyland All-American College Band, was selected to perform in Carnegie Hall's 2011 Professional Training Workshops directed by Brad Mehldau.
McDonald holds a Master of Music in jazz arts from Manhattan School of Music, where he was recipient of the William H. Borden Award, Clement Meadmore Scholarship, Manhattan School of Music Scholarship and Center for Music Entrepreneurship Fellowship. McDonald holds a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies and contemporary media, and a certificate in world music/ethnomusicology from the Eastman School of Music, where he was recipient of the Howard Hanson Scholarship and, through Eastman’s Conservatory Exchange Program, studied abroad at Le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. A dual-degree student and 2009 Provost Scholar, McDonald holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Rochester, where he was twice named to the NCAA University Athletic Association’s All-Academic Team as a varsity men’s soccer scholar-athlete.
McDonald has served as adjunct faculty within Manhattan College’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts, as teaching artist in MSM's Department of Distance Learning, and has given masterclasses at Columbia University Teachers College, MSM, Weaver Academy for the Performing & Visual Arts, Music Academy of North Carolina, Williamsville East High School and Greensboro Day School.
