Fleet Band Activities

Program Notes

Navy musicians (abbreviated as MU in the Navy) have a proud tradition of excellence in musical performance that encompasses a wide array of genres, styles and traditions. In addition to being highly talented professional musicians, Navy musicians must exemplify the high degree of professionalism and exemplary behavior that is expected of our Navy’s Sailors.

As a member of a Navy band, you will have the opportunity to perform virtually every idiom of music, from Sousa marches to top 40s hits. Your performances might include a parade down Main Street, USA or the Avenue des Champs Elysees in Paris. From military ceremonies aboard carriers at sea, to public shows, concerts and live broadcasts, Navy musicians are truly the public face of the U.S. Navy.

There are 11 official U.S. Navy bands to include nine active-duty fleet bands and two preferentially staffed bands, all featuring professional musicians from around the nation. Each band operates within its own geographic area of responsibility, representing America’s Navy around the world.

Fleet Band Activities (FBA), the central management office for our nine active duty fleet bands, is located at Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tennessee. This office has the responsibility of coordinating the assignment and distribution of personnel, equipment and funding to activities worldwide as well as managing the application and audition process for those wanting to serve as Navy musicians. Personnel at the FBA office work directly with Navy Personnel Command's Career Management Department (PERS-4) to meet our Musician manning requirements to the fleet.
