Musician 1st Class David A. Smith,


MU1 David Smith

Musician 1st Class David Smith, a native of Hyattsville, Maryland, joined the Navy Band in 2013 and serves as trumpeter in the Navy Band Cruisers. He attended Northwestern High School under the direction of Anthony Townes, who was initially responsible for introducing Smith to the Navy Band. In 2008 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from Morgan State University and in 2010, a Master of Music from Pennsylvania State University in trumpet performance. His primary trumpet teachers include Melvin Miles Jr., John Blount (former Navy Commodores member), Wayne Cameron and Langston Fitzgerald, III; he has participated in masterclasses with Wynton Marsalis, Terrance Blanchard, Wallace Roney, Jimmy Heath, George Rabbai, Cyrus Chestnut and Regina Carter.

After graduating, Smith was hired to play lead trumpet for the show band on Celebrity Cruises. In his first contract, he was promoted to band master on the Celebrity Summit cruise ship. This gave Smith the chance to travel the Southern Carribean Islands, Puerto Rico, Quebec City, Nova Scotia and Bermuda. Smith is also active in the local music community, performing with regional groups including the Baltimore Jazz Alliance Big Band, the Melting Pot Big Band and the Blue Moon Big Band. He has served on the faculty at Loyola University in Baltimore.

In his free time, Smith enjoys teaching music, working out, reading and spending time with his family and friends.
