Meet the Musician
Senior Chief Musician Melissa D. Bishop,
Senior Chief Musician Melissa Bishop, a native of Atlanta, joined the Navy Band in 1998. She attended Indiana University, earning a Bachelor of Music in 1992 and a Master of Music in 1994, both in clarinet performance. Her teachers include James Campbell, Eli Eban, Howard Klug and Earl Bates. Bishop also spent one year studying with Piet Honigh at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, Holland. She has performed with the Orquésta Sinfónica de Galicia in La Coruña, Spain, the McLean Symphony Orchestra, and the Camarata Orchestra of Bloomington, Indiana. She is also a regular performer on Navy Band chamber recitals. In addition to her performance duties, Bishop serves as the Concert Band's saxophone section leader and as one of the Navy Band's assistant drum majors. She is also head of the band’s drug testing unit and assistant casualty assistance calls officer.
In her free time, Bishop enjoys spending time with family, reading, gardening and biking. She is also an avid dog trainer and regularly competes in dog agility competitions.
