Meet the Musician
Musician 1st Class Christopher G. Buchanan,
Musician 1st Class Christopher Buchanan, from Fairfax, Virginia, joined the Navy Band as a trumpet instrumentalist in 2014 after serving seven years with the U.S. Naval Academy Band in Annapolis, Maryland. He was appointed staff arranger in 2017. In addition to his musical duties, Buchanan oversees all auditions for the Navy Band and helps to facilitate the annual Young Artist Solo Competition.
Buchanan holds Bachelor of Music degrees in both composition and performance and a Master of Music degree from the University of Illinois. He has also earned a Master of Music in musicology and a Doctor of Musical Arts in trumpet from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where his research into the music of Giovanni Gabrieli earned him the Irving Lowens Prize in Musicology. He studied trumpet with Ronald Romm, Michael Ewald, Joe Burgstaller and Ed Hoffman and studied composition with Joel Puckett, Stephen Taylor and Zack Browning.
Buchanan has performed with the Annapolis, Richmond, Charlottesville and Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestras and formerly served on the faculty of the University of Virginia. As a composer and arranger, he has written music for the U.S. Marine Band, U.S. Naval Academy Band, Charlottesville Symphony and members of the Baltimore Symphony. He is also an avid marathon and ultramarathon runner.
