Meet the Musician
Musician 1st Class William H. Dunn,
Musician 1st Class Bill Dunn, a native of Canton, Ohio, joined the Navy Band in 2006. Prior to the Cruisers, Dunn was a member of United States Military Academy Band at West Point. He earned a Bachelor of Music from The Ohio State University in trumpet performance and a Master of Music in trumpet performance from the Manhattan School of Music, studying classical trumpet with Vincent Penzarella, jazz trumpet with Byron Stripling, improvisation with Garry Dial, Afro-Cuban music with Bobby Sanabria and arranging with Manny Albam. Other significant trumpet teachers in his career include Richard Burkart, William Adam, Pharez Whitted, Laurie Frink, Charley Davis and Dave Sheetz.
Dunn has performed at amusement parks, music festivals, on cruise ships and has toured as a soloist throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. In 1996 after studying in Rome, Italy, with Mauro Maur, he pursued a career in music in New York City. He has performed on numerous touring Broadway shows, radio jingles, regional orchestras and appeared with Bobby Sanabria, Dave Brubeck, Red Rodney, Candido, Wynton Marsalis, The Lew Anderson Big Band, The New York Latin Jazz Orchestra, The Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York and the O'jays among many others. He can be heard on Delos and Koch record labels, and enjoys an active clinician/soloist career. He is also a featured soloist on many Navy Band concerts.
Dunn still maintains an active teaching studio and many of his students have won international competitions. In his free time, he spends time with family.
