Meet the Musician
Chief Musician Christian H. Johanson,
Chief Musician Christian Johanson, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, joined the Navy Band in 2002. He earned a Bachelor of Music form the University of Akron and a Master of Music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, both in music performance. Johanson also began Artist Diploma studies at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. His teachers include Karen Schneider, William Hoyt, Douglas Hill, and Randy Gardner. Prior to joining the Navy Band, Johanson was a finalist in the Coleman Chamber Music Competition, a repertory training fellow at the Brevard Music Center, and a three-year member of the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria. He has performed numerous times with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and soloed with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra under the late Erich Kunzel. Johanson has also appeared with Ray Charles, Andre Watts, Renee Fleming, Marvin Hamlisch, Sylvia McNair, Paavo Jarvi, and Keith Lockhart.
In addition to his performing duties at the Navy Band, Johanson is a national tour manager, organizing all aspects of national concert tours and a Concert Band stage crew chief, managing equipment loading and stage set-up at concerts. He is also completing a year-long photo essay of the Navy Ceremonial Band.
