Musician 1st Class Andrew J. Skaggs,


MU1 Andrew J. Skaggs

Musician 1st Class Andrew Skaggs joined the Navy Band in 2007.  He attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.  Prior to his appointment to the Navy Band, he was principal trombonist with the South Carolina Philharmonic and second trombonist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.  He has performed with the Indianapolis, North Carolina, Phoenix, Maryland, Florida West Coast, Augusta, Annapolis, Fairfax and Huntsville Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Arizona and Sarasota Opera Companies.  His teachers include James Beckel at DePauw University, Gail Wilson at Arizona State University and Joseph Alessi at the 2006 Alessi Seminar in Fossano, Italy.

Skaggs has been a guest recitalist at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, a clinician at the North Carolina Trombone Festival, and a guest soloist at the 2008 Eastern Trombone Workshop where he premiered "Five Preludes" by Kenneth Amis.  In 2006 he was heard on South Carolina Public Radio as a featured soloist with the South Carolina Philharmonic performing Paul Creston's "Fantasy for Trombone and Orchestra".

A well-rounded musician, Skaggs performs in styles ranging from swing to salsa to R & B.  He has made appearances with Anthony Hamilton, Wynonna and Al Jarreau, and has recorded for the Slimstyle, D'Note and Sony BMG labels.  In addition to trombone performance, Skaggs is also a published composer.
