Meet the Musician
Chief Musician Tia F. Wortham,
Tia Wortham, a native of Bradenton, Florida, joined the Navy Band in 1989 as co-principal bassoon. Since 1999, she has served as principal bassoonist and section leader. Also a classical soprano, she has been a featured soloist with the Concert Band on local concerts and national concert tours. She studied bassoon at The Florida State University, where she received her Bachelor of Music Performance. Her teachers there were Bill Winstead (principal bassoon, Cincinnati Symphony), John Hunt, and Tina Carpenter. She also studied bassoon at The Catholic University of America, where she earned her Master of Music Performance, studying with Linda Harwell (former principal bassoon, National Symphony). Chief Wortham has performed on bassoon and contrabassoon with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, and as bassoonist and soprano soloist with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic. She is a former clinician at Howard University, where she taught bassoon for six years.
Collaterally, she has served as National Tour Manager, Public Affairs Assistant, Stage Crew Chief, and Music Copyist Coordinator. In her free time, she enjoys helping in the Navy Band’s Music Library.
